President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today met His Eminence Emmanuel Wamala and commend him for his contribution to faith and social transformation in Uganda.
During the visit, President Musevemi agreed that government will support his family foundation’s Kamagwa Hospital, while it remains a private facility, and that the Ministry of Tourism will support the establishment of a museum to preserve his legacy.
Cardinal Wamala requested that President Museveni, serve as Patron of the project and he accepted and wished him good health and God’s blessings as he marks 99 years.

Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, the Archbishop Emeritus of Kampala, is currently in a stable state, living a quiet, prayerful life in retirement at the age of 99.
Born on December 15th 1926, Cardinal Wamala turned 99 on December 15th 2025 and he is recognized as one of the oldest living cardinals in the Catholic Church and reports indicate he is generally in good health for his age, described as “still full of sap, still green,” while spending his days praying, reading, resting and doing light exercise.
He lives at the Priests’ Retirement Home in Nsambya, Kampala and he has been largely out of the public eye since July 2017 but remains a highly respected figure in Uganda.
He made a notable appearance on his 99th birthday in December 2025, where he wore new priestly vestments presented by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere and expressed gratitude for the gift of life and prayed for peace in Uganda as he remains a symbol of unity and a “living witness to the Gospel”.
While he is no longer active in the day-to-day administration of the Church and cannot vote in a papal conclave (due to being over 80), he continues to hold the honorary title of Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Ugo.
Cardinal Wamala served as the Archbishop of Kampala from 1990 until his retirement in August 2006.
