KANUNGU- The visiting Rotary District Governor 9214, Rrotariian Agnes Mungati Batengas has appealed to Rotarians to work hard and ensure they leave a legacy as they strive to serve humanity.

Ms Batengas who visited the Rotary Club of Kihihi in Kanungu District, South Western Uganda yesterday said that Rotary is all about identifying the community pressing and then finding resources to solve them by supporting them financially where need arises.

The Rotary Club District Governor that covers Uganda and Tanzania was speaking at the official launch of Hand-washing facilities that have been put in place in 10 Primary Schools in Kanungu District with an aim of improving the sanitation in order to encourage the children to remain in schools especially the girl child.

Rotarian Batangas hailed the Rotary Club of Kihihi for making correct needs assessment that enabled them to get the Rotary Global Grant in partnership with Rotary Club of Reno in USA that will be used to put in place facilities will help the children to remain in school.

“Children must grow in a clean environment and these facilities must be kept clean for the present and coming generations to come” She said.

She asked the Headteachers and Members of School Management receiving the facilities to utilise and safeguard the facilities on top of instilling and enforcing discipline among the children.

She also thanked the government officials who attended the event saying that they understand better what it means to support community services especially those aimed at imptobinh the welfare and provide community improvement.

The President of the Rotary Club of Kihihi Rotarian Erasmus Twishime said that they received a Rotary Global Grant worth US 172,000 dollars which is equivalent to Ugx 650 million dollars which they have used to construct Hand-washing facilities in 10 hard to reach schools in Kanungu District.

The schools include Rushaka and Kyantuhe Primary Schools in Nyamirama Sub-county, Nkunda and Ishasha Primary Schools in Nyanga Sub-county, Buremba and Katunda Primary Schhols in Mpungu Sub-county, Kiziba and Bugoro Primary Schools in Kinaaba Sub-county and Katojo and Rugandu Primary Schools in Rutenga Sub-county.

The benefiting schools will also get a 10,000 liter water tank and also supply washable menstrual pads to girls above 9 years in those schools.

According to Rtn Atamba Holiness who is in charge of the Washable Menstral Pads, the girls will be trained on how best they can use the pads and make a follow up monitoring exercise to see how they have been used and sustained.

The official event which took place at Ishasha Primary school was attended by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner Zepher Mugisha, the Acting Chief Administrative Officer Innocent Atuhaire, the District Education Officer Shaban Adams, Chairpersons and Headteachers of beneficiary schools local council leaders and the general public.

The Rotary Global Grant is a grant from the Rotary Foundation that funds large-scale, sustainable international activities and these grants support activities that align with Rotary’s areas of focus, such as promoting peace, Fighting disease Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene saving mothers and children supporting education, growing local economies and protecting the environment.

Global grants can also include, graduate-level study for career-minded professionals, humanitarian projects, scholarships and vocational training.
