Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament Hon Evelyne Ninsiima Kikafunda has today joined residents of Muko Sub-county in cleaning Muko Market as part of efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote a cleaner environment.
The exercise has brought together community members and local leaders to remove plastic waste and other rubbish from the market, raising awareness about proper waste management and the need for residents to take collective responsibility for protecting their environment.
Hon Ninsiima Kikafunda said the market was one of the most polluted areas in Rubanda District and she decided to awaken everyone concerned, including the government officials that it’s time to do something right about it.
She also explained that poor waste disposal especially plastics and kaveera pollutes the water sources such as lakes, and rivers after rainfall and lamented that these pollutants end up generating the Cancer Virus which require a lot of money to cure.
She also cautioned against burning of the plastics and kaveera, saying that they can also pollute the air and encouraged proper waste management and recycling, but also expressed concern about the lack of enough waste management facilities in Rubanda District and accross the country.
“I’ve been constantly asking the Ministers who come to our committees to avail the garbage collection facilities. It’s good we have the National Cleaning Day. But where does the garbage go after collection ? That’s the question I keep asking” She said.
Muko Subcounty Chief Ms Rebecca Kehoda informed the Hon Evelyn Kikafunda that the Market lacked Waste Management Facilities, such as Dust Bins, and there was no substantive Garbage Collection Centre for the Subcounty.
Ms Kehoda appreciated Hon Kikafunda’s efforts, and asked the community members, especially traders to take up the initiative as a routine to keep their marker clean.
Rubanda District Secretary for Health and Education, Obed Mutatiina Kitabutuuka, said that he had realized the Problem of kaveera and plastics at Muko Market, which is majorly caused by reckless dumping of wastes from the shops and other businesses around. He asked the people to take responsibility of managing their own waste, to prevent diseases.
Kitabutuuka thanked Hon. Kikafunda, for walking the talk as a member of the Parliamentary Committees, Natural resources and Environment and Climate Change.
