RUBIRIZI – Youths have been challenged to get involved in non-formal education so as to gain productive practical skills and can help them get a source of income for their life survival and fighting poverty.

This challenge was made by Rubirizi district Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Hon Kesande Grace on Friday 5th January 2024 while launching the Shoes making project in Busonga, Butoha in Magambo Sub – county Rubirizi district.

This publication learnt that atleast 700 women and youths from all 11 sub counties that make up Rubirizi district have already been trained in shoe making so as to generate their own income. This project aims at empowering women, PWDs and youths through informal vocational training with practical skills and it will cover a variety of topical areas including critical thinking, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and career development through hands-on learning.

In her words after launching the project, Hon Kesande Grace Bataringaya requested the community members to embrace and support it as it will help them get out of poverty, hunger and curb domestic violence in their families. She says it’s targeting more than 150,000 women and youths to ensure that all families benefit from the initiative.

Hon Kesande Grace asked residents to work hard since most of the people are poor because of laziness. She further advised men to always support their wives and eradicate poverty from their families plus putting much emphasis on agriculture for social transformation in the country.

She then lectured the trainees to learn conquering all the obstacles they face in their daily lives as a vital step towards achieving success in this shoes making project and also called for joint effort from the community to create required jobs for the young generation.

Some of the trainees who talked to our reporter including Madam Kyohirwe Mary from Butoha and Madam Abarikurungi Beatrace welcomed the initiative and thanked Hon Kesande Grace for bringing it as it is one way of eradicating poverty from the society.

The trainees further thanked the Government of Uganda for always coming up with projects and supporting them and said this project will help women and youths to increase household income and improve their standards of living in the district.
