RUKUNGIRI, Uganda – September 9, 2025 – In a powerful display of unity, Arinaitwe Frank Rukanirwa has pledged his full support for Security Minister Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Rujumbura Constituency, ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The announcement came during a meeting chaired by Alhajji Moses Kagongo, NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson, at Mosa Courts in Kampala.
Rukanirwa, who competed fiercely in the NRM primaries on July 17, 2025, secured 17,083 votes but was outpaced by Muhwezi’s 21,631 votes. In a gesture reflecting the NRM’s core ideology of unity, Rukanirwa graciously stepped down, committing to support Muhwezi and the party’s leadership under President Museveni.
“This is a win for NRM and our shared vision,” Rukanirwa stated, urging supporters to rally behind Muhwezi for the constituency’s development.
Muhwezi, who confirmed this will be his final term as Rujumbura’s MP, praised Rukanirwa’s decision and pledged to mentor him for future leadership roles.
“Frank’s support strengthens our resolve to deliver on health, education, water, and infrastructure projects,” Muhwezi said, emphasizing his commitment to completing ongoing initiatives before retiring.
Alhajji Kagongo lauded both leaders for embodying the NRM’s principle of unity in diversity, noting, “This reconciliation sets a strong example for the party as we prepare for 2026.” The meeting underscored the NRM’s efforts to resolve internal disputes and present a united front against opposition parties.
The Rujumbura primaries, though competitive, were largely peaceful, with Muhwezi condemning reported malpractices like voter bribery. With Rukanirwa’s backing, Muhwezi is poised to consolidate NRM’s dominance in Rujumbura, ensuring a robust campaign for the general elections.
