The Nyakishenyi Sub county deputy speaker, Gideon Tumwesigye has defected from the opposition Forum for democratic change (FDC)to the ruling party the National Resistance Movement “NRM”.
Tumwesigye announced his defection on Monday evening at Palm Royal hotel in Rukungiri where the Rubabo County MP aspirant also NRM chairperson Nyarushanje sub county, David Tushanomwe Ndindi welcomed him and dressed him in yellow attire.
“I have decided myself without being convinced by anyone to change my goal posts from FDC to NRM and am ready to work for it come rain come shine,” he said.
Tumwesigye said the biggest reason why he joined NRM is because it’s a party that has been established and cannot be sold at whatever.
“I was very comfortable in FDC but since the rumor of selling it started to circulate that’s why I changed my mind. I could not join PFF again, which can also be sold even before the term of office ends,” Tumwesigye said.
He said the constitution of FDC was loose which he said was a reason for selling it as a goat. “You cannot change the top leaders of a young party almost every year and you think the party is safe. Just wait, you will again hear that PFF is on the market for sale very soon, which i can’t be part of that saga,” he said.
Tumwesigye is councillor of Kafunjo parish in Nyakishenyi sub county council and was only member of opposition in the council the rest are NRM flag bearers.
” My people in Katonya trusted me while in opposition and when I reached the council all councilors who are NRM overwhelmingly supported me for the post of deputy speaker but I have decided to leave FDC and join my colleagues,” he said.
He added that before defection he consulted his people and told him to join David Tushabomwe Ndindi camp if he was to remain relevant.
“I have done what the people of Kafunjo told me to do. When I am to defect I should be in Ndindi camp which i have done today,” he said.
Tumwesigye added that he had other roles as he was treasurer of FDC in the whole of Rubabo county and the chairperson of all councilors in Nyakishenyi sub county.
“Now since I am no longer a member of FDC, I am going to arrange with FDC leadership and hand over whatever I have for the party so that I can join the new party when I am clean,” he said.
Tumwesigye handed over his FDC party card no. 013067 which he obtained on 15thApril 2020.
The three-time contestant for Rubabo MP, David Tushabomwe Ndindi said it was a big day to welcome such a big person in the movement and particularly in his camp.
“This has been one of the major obstacles in elections of Nyakishenyi but God is good to find that he has seen the light and decided to join the winning party,” he said.
He said he will have led him to the national NRM chairperson once he visits Rukungiri just for a hand shake. We are now sure of 100% win for NRM in Nyakishenyi sub county.
