Wreckage of the bus and taxi after the accident

NEWS- The Police have released the list of the dead and injured victims following last night head on collusion accident involving Pefect Coaches registration number UBN 331G from Kanungu District heading to Kampala and a tax registration number UBA 341G heading to Rukungiri.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed that the accident took place last night at around 10pm at Omukabingo village near Omukiragiro Trading Center in Buyanja Sub County along Rukungiri – Ntungamo road where 3 people died on spot and 19 others were left with life threatening injuries.

Maate named the three dead as Ronald Kakimpa a Taxi conductor, 3 year old Liberty Bonance of Congolese Nationality and a passenger in the taxi whose identity was not immediately identified.

The injured include UPDF Capt. Musinguzi Bright a adult, PDF Officer, Staff Sargent Kwesigwa Edgar, Lance Carpal Tukwasibwe Alex and Okello Francis male adult UPDF Officer.

Others who got injuries are Pacific Claude a Congolese national, Abenomugisha Blair, Nyabanawe Bernard, Tumwebaze Annah, Barisimwaki James, .Amumpire Jackline, Kiconco Florence, Komushana Oliver, Tayebwa Oscar, Hassan Kakuru, Baryakira Frank, Atwongirwe Johnbosco, Mwesigwa Andrew who was a driver of Taxi, Yukahirwa Godfrey the  conductor of the bus and Muzenero Charles.

Maate explained that while bus was coming from Rukungiri town heading to Ntungamo side and it deviated from its lane and ended up colliding with Taxi. The bus fell on the side of the driver in the middle of the road, and the Taxi turned and faced opposite direction.

Maate said that all the injured victims are currently admitted at Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital for medical attention, but the driver of the bus survived, fled the scene and is still at large.

The scene visited by a team of Police officers led by District Police Commander Kyangungu Apollo and a sketch plan drafted and relevant statements recorded at the scene and the bodies of the dead were retrieved and taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III Mortuary for postmortem examination.

The vehicles are parked at Rukungiri Police Station pending IOV- inspection, but preliminary investigations suspect that the accident was caused by reckless driving by the bus driver.
