KAMPALA- Graduands of 14th edition at St. Lawrence University have been told to embrace values gained during their time at University. This sounding call was made by the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, HE. Maj. (Rtd). Jessica Alupo Epel, who doubles as the chancellor of the University.
In her address during the graduation ceremony which was held on Thursday at St. Lawrence University main campus grounds, Lubaga Division in Kampala, the Vice President, Alupo told them to celebrate the accomplishments of their graduation by taking a moment to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and resilience that each and every one has demonstrated throughout your academic journey. “As you embark on the next chapter of your lives, it is important to remember the valuable lessons and experiences you have gained during your time at our University ”, VP Alupo said.
She informed them that the experiences have not only shaped their academic knowledge but have also cultivated essential skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication. “It is these skills that will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation for your future successes” she added. Alupo pointed out that graduation is a step into the world beyond the walls of the University. “It is crucial to recognize that learning is a lifelong process” and told them that the world is constantly evolving, and so, they must always update their knowledge and skills.
She further encouraged them to embrace opportunities to learn and grow throughout their careers and never be afraid to challenge but push beyond their comfort zone. She noted that, today, it is important to acknowledge the support of the system that has helped them to reach a point in their lives, especially through their families, friends and mentors who have played a significant role in their journey by offering; guidance, encouragement and love. And told them to take a moment to express gratitude for their unwavering support and know that they are forever indebted to them.
She emphasized that whereas they venture forth into the world, they should remember the importance of building and maintaining a strong network of professional connections. “The relationships you forge today will not only provide you with valuable insights and advice but also serve as a source of support and guidance throughout your careers” she added.
The Vice President noted that its 14th Graduation Ceremony was a special day in my life as she marked one year in the office as Chancellor of St Lawrence University but also as its 1st female Chancellor. Conclusively, she thanked the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Government for its policy on Liberalization Higher Education. Saying that this policy has opened its doors to the private sector to invest in Education at all levels to complement the Government.
Ms. Alupo, appreciated and acknowledged the efforts of the Late Prof. Lawrence Mukiibi, the founder of St. Lawrence University together with the current Board of Directors and the University Council for keeping the candle lit.
The 14th graduation ceremony saw a total of over 528 students graduating in faculties of; Education, Arts and social sciences, Science and technology, Business administration and management studies. The event attracted different dignitaries across different political parties among them was; NRM’s Treasure General Hon. Rose Namayanja Nsereko, Hon..Mike Sebalu who doubles as the Chairman of the University council, Former VP. HE. Edward Ssekand and a member of Board of Directors, Hajjat Faridah kibowa, Kagwa Appolo from Buganda royal institute among others.
During the same event, there was a moment of silence in recognition of the founder of the University the late. Prof. Lawrence Mukiibi. St. Lawrence University is one of the Uganda’s private Universities founded by the Late Prof. Lawrence Mukiibi in 2006. The University took in the first student in September 2007 and was launched by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in October 2006.
