NEWS -The territorial police in Rukungiri district has registered a single fatal road accident that claimed life of one person and two others were critically injured.
According to ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi region police spokesperson, theĀ 20th August 2024 accident took place at around 2:30pm at Bagahwe Trading Centre, Bugangari sub countyĀ along Rukungiri-Kihihi Road in Rukungiri district and it involved a motorvehicle registration number UAT 055G Mitsubishi Fuso (Fuel tank) White in color.
Elly Maate identified the deceased as Abdullah Harman 32 years old, a Somali by nationality and a Manager Stabex Kihihi Branch, who was burnt beyond recognition.
He also identified the survivors as Qurash Mayengo aged 35 years, Muganda by tribe the driver and resident of Mbarara City and the turnman in the names of Brian Kiprimo, 27 years old and a Kenyan by nationality.
It is alleged that motor vehicle UAT 055G Mitsubishi Fuso Fuel tank while was loaded with fuel from Mbarara and delivering it to Kihihi Stabex branch and the vehicle had 3 occupants inclusive of the driver, turn man and the Manager.
It is said that the said vehicle upon reaching at Bagahwe while at a slope heading to the roundabout, the vehicle lost control while at a high speed failed to negotiate the round about and passed on one-way hitting a road furniture (give way sign post) making it (the vehicle) to rest in a trench facing the direction of Kihihi.
As a result, the vehicle immediately sparked fire and the manager couldn’t make it as he was burnt beyond recognition. The driver and the turn man were rushed to Nyakibale hospital before being referred to Mulago hospital for further medical attention.
Afande Maate revealed that the scene was visited and documented by DTO, Traffic officers and a Team of Fire Rukungiri, relevant statements were recorded and that with the help of Fire Brigade the fire was put out.
The body of the deceased was retrieved and taken to Rwakabengo health centre IV for postmortem examination.
According to police, the primary cause of the accident was reckless driving by the driver.
The case of a single fatal accident was recorded at Rukungiri Central Police station vide TAR 70/2024 as inquiries into the matter continue.
