KAMPALA- The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has cautioned security Agencies to stop disrespecting the catholic rosaries while arresting suspects.

On this, the Deputy Speaker has said he is going to hold a meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Parliamentary Chaplain, and Kalungu west MP Joseph Ssewungu to resolve the matter of disrespecting the Catholic Rosary by security operatives while arresting suspects.

This follows a concern raised by Ssewungu, the MP for Kalungu West constituency, regarding security operatives who broke a rosary during the arrest of Achilleo Kivumbi, a security guard of the NUP president.

It should be recalled that Kivumbi was arrested by unknown armed men donned in military attires last week from his home in Nansana, Wakiso district moving in a Noah (car) registration number UAP 164P.

Ssewungu has expressed bitterness and protested the manner in which security operatives are disrespecting religious symbols, warning that such actions could lead to uncalled-for consequences.

“Kivumbu was arrested illegally, and these security operatives broke his rosary. I have been waiting for an apology from the army or police       but nothing is happening. Mr Speaker. As a Catholic I pay much respect to the rosary, and I want to know, if a Muslim should remove the hut? Ssewungu noted. We want to know why this is happening.” Ssewungu said.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa has called for calm and appealed to security agencies to be mindful of their conduct during arrests.

“This is a very sensitive matter, I haven’t been able to watch the video, but also it is a matter that can inflame the nation, depending on how we handle it. So I will take it up. Am a catholic, I recite a rosary.” Tayebwa said adding that I have what i had because of the intercession of the virgin Mary.”
