NATIONAL- A disturbing incident occurred in Namisindwa District, Uganda, where an unregistered surgeon, Yokan Wonekha, was rescued by police from an angry mob.
The mob sought to lynch Wonekha after he allegedly mutilated the genitals of a boy during a traditional Kadodi circumcision ceremony in Bushuma village.
According to eyewitnesses, the mob, armed with machetes, clubs, and stones, began assaulting Wonekha after the incident.
However, timely intervention by Stephen Matenga, the LCI Chairperson of Bushuma Village, saved Wonekha from the mob.
The victim, in critical condition, was rushed to Butiru Crisco Hospital for further medical attention.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Stephen Masiga, the Communications Officer for Inzu Yamasaba, blaming the chaos on individuals who disregard the institution’s circumcision roadmap.
Fred Wamakoko, Chairperson of Local Surgeons in the Bugisu region, also condemned Wonekha’s actions, stating that he is not a registered surgeon.
Wonekha is currently detained at Bubutu Police Post as investigations continue. Police have called on the public to cooperate with investigations and adhere to the institution’s circumcision roadmap to avoid further incidents.
