NEWS- The Police in Kanungu District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of 24 year old identified as Niwampire Denis a resident of Nyamugari cell Mafuga parish Rutenga Sub-county Kanungu who was lynched by a mob for allegedly stealing Irish potatoes.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesman Elly Maate, it’s alleged that the deceased Niwampire was a known habitual thief who had disappeared from his home about a month ago and believed that his disappearance was linked to his habit of stealing from people’s homes and gardens and feared to be arrested.
Maate explained that the deceased started hiding in Maffugga Central Forest Reserve where where he also had a small irish potato garden, but on the fateful day, he was seen stealing irish potatoes from a nearby garden of Maimuna Powel a resident of Kerere village in Rubanda district where the local residents descended and lynched him.
Maate said that the Police were notified and visited the scene of crime and a postmortem examination was done at the crime scene and the body handed over to the relatives for burial, but no arrests have been done and no exhibit recovered but investigations are ongoing.
