Lake Kijanebarola where the incident happened

RAKAI- Three people drowned in the Lake Kijjanebarola at Kaserere village, Kibanda Sub County in Rakai district.

The deceased are identified as Edison Tibeijuka, 62 his 15 year old son Daniel Mpulire, and Julius Wasswa, 35 all residents of Kaserere village in Rakai district.

According to residents, the incident happened on Thursday at 11am.

Joseph Ssemanda, a fisherman at Kaserere landing site said that the trio was coming from their relatives at Pati village, Lwamaggwa Sub County party in Rakai district.

William Lutembesa, the LCI chairperson Kaserere zone attributed to the death of the relatives to hippopotamuses which are very rampant in the area.

According to Lutembesa, the deceased were not wearing life jackets asking the government to come to their rescue and give them life jackets. Ms Namutaawe Jesca, a resident of Kaserere, she heard the alarms from the lake and tried to seek for help but in vain.

“The lake had no bad weather, we wonder how they drowned, yet they were only three people on the boat'”

According to Ms Sylvia Nalwadda, the wife of late Edison Tibeijuka, she received information that her husband had died while she was home.

According to her, they had gone to see their children in Lwamaggwa and upon returning, they had 25kg of posho on board which they were given by their relatives.

Residents said that the increasing Hippopotamuses in the area have caused them loss. According to fishermen, they no longer go to fishing since the hippos are many.

So far, two bodies have been recovered from the lake and the hunt for Julius Wasswa is on.
