The Police in Rubanda District have registered the death of two people who were covered by sand at Nyamuriro Wolfram mining site.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said that it happened early morning on June 3rd 2025 when three people are said to have sneaked to carry out illegal sand mining.

However, it was unfortunate that they were trapped in the hole and two of them died on spot while the third person whose particulars are yet to be established, escaped unhurt.

Maate identified the deceased as 27 year old Acleo Bushato and Muhumuza both residents of Kalere Trading Centre on Kara Parish in Muko Sub-county in Rubanda District.

Maate explained that information was received from the in charge Nyamuriro Mineral Police Post that three people had sneaked in Wolfram mining site and had been trapped by sand in the hole and two died and one whose name not identified fled the scene and is still at large.

The District Police Commander Rubanda immediately organised the team of officers and they visited the scene and on arrival at the scene, they found that the two Police Guards and one Onesmus the former chair person KI3R Mining Company Limited had retrieved the bodies.

The Distriict Police Commander Abel Barugahare, the OC CID Ms Namunga Fatina and team, later went to Kalere Trading Centre to do community policing restraining the public from doing illegal mining as investigations continue.
