KAMPALA- The International Crimes Division of the High Court heard that two lawyers appointed to represent suspected killers of Senior Principal State Attorney Joan Kagezi declined instructions due to conflicts of interest.
The four accused persons including; Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka, John Kibuuka, Nasur Abdallah Mugonole, and John Masajjage face murder and terrorism charges stemming from Kagezi’s death on March 30, 2015.
During their first court appearance, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Lino Anguzu informed the court that lawyers Sylvia Namawejje and Ali Hassan Kato declined representation.
The presiding judge, Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, asked the accused if they had lawyers, but they replied negatively, citing limited access to their preferred attorneys due to prison restrictions.
Justice Komuhangi ordered new lawyers to be assigned and Anguzu announced plans to file an application to protect prosecution witnesses. The case has been adjourned until December 9, 2024.
Evidence presented includes a postmortem report, bullet cartridges, blood swabs, and forensic analysis linking the accused to the crime.
The prosecution aims to prove the accused acted indiscriminately, disregarding public safety and property, with a motive to influence the government or intimidate the public for political, religious, and economic gains.
