participants who attended the Workshop on the drafting the National Social Protection Strategy

KAMPALA- The National Organization of Trade Unions, has noted that most of the informal economy workers, lack access to social security which increase vulnerability to socio-economic shock and resilience to both their lives and livelihoods.

This was observed yesterday during a one day Consultative workshop that discussed the draft National Social Protection Strategy for Informal Economy Workers which took place at Kolping Hotel in Hoima City.

The workshop was organised by the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) in conjunction with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), and Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development.

The National Social Protection Policy (2015) highlights social security as a crucial pillar to mitigate income shocks and consumption decline due to events such as retirement, unemployment, illness, disability, old age and the deaths of breadwinners, among others.

However, it has been established that for many years, the informal economy workers, across the economy lack access to social security which increase their vulnerability to socio-economic shock and resilience to both their lives and livelihoods after leaving their jobs which are not pensionable.
