KAMPALA- National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi is set to undergo surgery to remove teargas canister fragments from his leg, following an incident in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, where police allegedly shot at him.

NUP Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi confirmed Kyagulanyi’s condition, stating he is receiving emergency treatment at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya and is ‘in pain but sedated.

“A tear-gas cannister was fired onto his left leg, causing a severe injury.

The X-ray report shows there are some fragments from the tear-gas canister which are embedded in his leg, and a surgery will be conducted to remove them.” Ssenyonyi.

Police, however, denied shooting Kyagulanyi, claiming he ‘stumbled and got injured’ while getting into his car.

The 42-year-old former pop star turned politician has been a vocal opponent of President Museveni, challenging him in the 2021 presidential election and securing 34.83% of the vote.

Kyagulanyi disputed the results, citing electoral irregularities. Despite this, his party won a majority of legislative seats in the Eleventh Parliament, making him the Opposition leader.
