MBARARA- Somber and grief engulfed Metropolitan University (MIU) Mbarara Campus on Friday after a first-year student, Akankunda Desire, tragically lost her life in a fatal car accident during the university’s Guild Representative Council (GRC) rallies.
According to the Campus’ Registrar Nicolas Kaziro, Akankunda died at Biharwe playground after the car she was aboard with fellows overturned during the Student’s campaign rally.
Desire, a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) student in her first year, second semester, was reportedly caught in a reckless driving incident during the campaign procession. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot, leaving fellow students and her family in shock.
Her father, devastated by the loss, took to X formerly twitter to express his frustration and demand accountability.
“Dear @M_Kananura @PoliceUg @mkituuma, my daughter has just perished in this reckless driving at Mbarara Metropolitan University guild campaign. Please do something and regulate these processions. I don’t want to see another parent in tears.”
The heartbreaking tweet has since sparked a conversation about the safety of political processions within universities, with many calling for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
According to the circulating video on different Social Media platforms, showing the accident, students on board congested to one side, overpowering the vehicle to one side forcing it to fall to the right side and overturning thereafter.
The registrar Kaziro regrets the incident and added that burial arrangements will be communicated later. Ankakunda is reportedly from Rubaare Ntungamo district. POATE2025
