NEWS- The Police of Kabale District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 27 year old girl identified as Ms Mirembe Hindu a resident of Kashaka Nuabugando village in Bubare Sub-county in Mbarara district, who allegedly drowned in Lake Bunyonyi and died instantly.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesman Elly Maate has confirmed the incident saying that it is alleged that the late Mirembe and her boyfriend Robert Hausvih left Kampala on the 9th December 2024 to one of the Islands at lake Bunyonyi in Bufuka village in Mwendo Parish in Kitumba Sub-county, for the festival season holidays where they wanted to have change of environment.
Maate explained that during the night of 1st February 2025, when the couple and others were watching the Liverpool game, Ms Mirembe decided to jump into the waters of Lake Bunyonyi to have a swim and after some few minutes she came out, but dived again into the waters again and couldn’t come back.
It was at this time that her boyfriend, Hausvih and his friends jumped into the water and managed to find her and got her out and they tried giving her a recovery first aid, but she couldn’t respond and then called for a car and rushed her to Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Maate said that the case was reported today February 2nd 2025 at Kabale Central Police Station and officers responded to the scene and had it examined, processed and documented and a postmortem examination was done at Rugarama Hospital Mortuary and the body was handed over to relatives and taken to Mbarara for a decent burial.
