NEWS– The Police in Kenya have confirmed that twelve people died following a grisly road accident involving a Nissan Taxi and a Lorry at Arimi along Njoro – Elburgon Road in Nakuru County.
The Police said that the accident occurred last night when the driver of the Lorry lost control crashed into the 14-seater passenger vehicle, resulting in several death and injuries.
The Police officers arrived at the scene of the accident and secured the area following the incident as passersby gathered at the scene to witness the aftermath and offer assistance to the injured.
A team of rescuers from the Nakuru County Disaster Management team and Area Traffic Police officers arrived at the scene and helped remove the victims from the wreckage and rushed a few survivors to the nearby health facilities.
Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara said Arimi area has long been considered a blackspot with drivers and motorists being urged to exercise vigilance while on the busy road.
Images shared online showed the Taxi (Matatu) was extensively damaged, with a shattered windscreen, broken seats and windows and deflated tyres, depicting the extent of the impact.
On the other hand, the white truck was recorded leaning on one side across the road and damaged on its front side, with residents spotted surrounding the scene.
Bodies of those who died were taken to the Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification and notificationto their next of kin, as the Police launched investigations into the cause of the accident.
The Njoro-Elburgon road carnage comes two days after several people sustained injuries in Nairobi’s Githurai 45 area following an accident which occurred on Wednesday May 7th, after a Matatu travelling from Nairobi’s Central Business District to Thika lost control and rammed into pedestrians.
According to Kasarani Sub-County Police Commander Emmanuel Rono, the accident left three passengers nursing serious injuries while nine others were treated for minor injuries.
Meanwhile, data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) of Kenya has revealed that at least 1,139 people died as a result of road crashes in Kenya between January 1st and March 31st 2025 which is a slight decrease from the 1,166 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024 and most of the victims are pedestrians.
