Senior Prisons Officers undertaking the Intermediate Command and Staff Course are in Karamoja

Senior Prisons Officers undertaking the Intermediate Command and Staff Course conducted a benchmarking visit to Uganda Prison Farm Amita in the Karamoja Sub-region.

The visit exposed participants to Uganda Prisons Service’s contribution to national development through cotton production for the textile industry, infrastructural development including the establishment of eight blocks of 64 staff housing units and ongoing construction of modern prisoners’ wards to enhance accommodation and welfare.

The officers also observed the installation of security systems such as watchtowers, lighting, and perimeter fences, as well as agricultural innovations including post harvest handling mechanisms, agroforestry and the maize seed multiplication project.

According to the Uganda Prisons Service told journalists that the benchmarking exercise is expected to broaden the officers’ understanding of effective prison management, production, and welfare improvement initiatives, equipping them with practical knowledge to replicate and strengthen similar programs in their respective stations and this hands-on exposure strengthens the objectives of the Course in building competent, innovative, and development-oriented prison leaders.

Founded in 1973 in North Eastern region – Karamoja, Amita Prison Farm is a major Uganda Prisons Service production unit known for cotton growing, maize seed multiplication.

Other vocational skilling programs of inmates and has evolved into a model farm with improved staff housing, prisoners wards and security infrastructure promoting institutional self-sustainability and correctional excellence.
