NEWS- Kanungu District Senior Environment Officer, George Agaba has called on the people to cooperate with stakeholders in the implementation of wetlands restoration in the District.

Agaba made the remarks January 14th 2025, while participating in the construction of landmark pillars that shows the boundary between wetlands and residents land in Nyakagyera village in Rushaka Parish in Nyamirama Subcounty where a total of estimated 6 kms of wetlands and swamps has been earmarked for restoration.

He said that the restoration of wetlands in the district which will cover the entire district is being done for the good of the present and future generations and therefore all the people should participate and cooperate and called on people using wetlands who have not registered to do so.

The restoration exercise which is being implemented in 24 districts in Uganda is being supported by the Government of Uganda with funding from Green Climate Fund and United Nations Development Programme.

He said that people have been sensitised to voluntarily vacate the Wetlands and in turn the government of Uganda will give them livelihood support consistent with future land use.

Agaba said that some of the residents in Nyamirama Subcounty who voluntarily vacated tge Wetlands on the 6km stretch that go through 4 villages of Nyakagyera, Mashoko, Nyaruhungye and Nyabushoro have been given livelihood support in form of goats, chicken and pigs, while groups of women will be given indigenous seeds for planting on top of farm implements like hoes, pangas and folks.
