AU Commission Bids Farewell to Chief of Staff Ambassador Souef

The African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has paid tribute to outgoing Chief of Staff Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef following his appointment as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Central Africa.

While speaking at a farewell ceremony attended by members of the African Union Commission’s Cabinet,Chairperson Youssouf praised Ambassador Souef’s years of service to the African Union and his contributions to peacebuilding, diplomacy, and institutional development across the continent.

The Chairperson described Ambassador Souef as a respected statesman and seasoned diplomat whose leadership helped the African Union navigate some of Africa’s most complex political and security challenges.

“He is a statesman of exceptional wisdom and a distinguished diplomat whose leadership, sound judgment, and commitment to dialogue have helped navigate some of the continent’s most complex challenges with tact, discretion and professionalism,” Youssouf said.

Ambassador Souef, who has served in several senior positions within the African Union system, most recently held the role of Chief of Staff to the Chairperson of the AU Commission.

According to Youssouf, Ambassador Souef’s tenure strengthened the institution and played a significant role in advancing the Commission’s strategic priorities and overall mission.

The African Union Chairperson expressed profound appreciation for his colleague’s distinguished service, noting that his contributions had left a lasting impact on both the Commission and the wider continent.

Much of Ambassador Souef’s work at the AU focused on peacebuilding, mediation, and conflict resolution, areas in which he earned recognition for promoting dialogue and supporting efforts aimed at fostering stability across Africa.

His appointment by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as Special Representative for Central Africa marks a significant transition from continental diplomacy to a key international peace and security role.

As Special Representative, Ambassador Souef will lead the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), where he will be responsible for supporting peace, security, governance and regional cooperation initiatives in a region facing multiple political and security challenges.

While bidding him farewell, Chairperson Youssouf emphasised that Ambassador Souef would continue to be part of the broader African Union family, saying that his legacy of service and commitment to Africa will continue to inspire future generations.

The ceremony underscored the close collaboration between the African Union and the United Nations in addressing peace and security issues across the continent, with officials expressing confidence that Souef’s experience at the AU will strengthen his work in his new UN assignment.
