President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has met with Busoga sugarcane farmers and millers to discuss the price fluctuations of cane and to seek solutions to these issues.
The meeting took place at Mayuge State Lodge where the sugarcane growers expressed their need for government support to subsidize their costs and maximize their profits and the President promised that the government will work to ensure that farmers receive fair prices.
The President was also informed about the unnecessary delays in establishing a sugar council, which is crucial for mediation, regulation and representation and assured that this issue must be resolved by Monday next week without fail.
President Museveni reiterated his advice to sugarcane farmers that they should cultivate on a larger scale to achieve better financial benefits.
The President made categorically clear that farming sugarcane on just 2 acres of land is not profitable enough and one would struggle to earn even Ugx 4 million from 5 acres.
He gave an example of farmers like Nyakaana in Fort Portal who is earning millions from well-managed farming on just one acre and asked Busoga farmers to make the right calculations in order not to miss out on profitable opportunities.
