Museveni at the Electoral Commission headquarters

The Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugyenyi has declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as a duly nominated candidate to contest for the January 2026 presidential elections.

The nomination exercise took place at the new Electoral Commission Headquarters in Lweza where 81 year old President Museveni presented himself to contest for the 7th time for the country’s highest office, which if he wins will extend his stay in power to 45 years.

President Museveni was flanked by his wife, Mrs Janet Museveni, Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anitah Among, Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, the NRM National Vice Chairman Al-Hajj Moses Kigongo and former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, and number of Ministers and NRM Central Executive Committee leaders.

His papers were presented to the commission by Lawyer Edwin Karugire and after 10 minutes of scrutiny, Justice Byabakama declared Museveni a duly nominated candidate, his papers having been found in order.

While opening the nomination exercise, Byabakama said only five political parties and candidates had so far met all the requirements for nominations including submitting supporter signatures.
