President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has made it categorically clear that Somalia will not be abandoned over threats of withdrawal of financial and logistical support by some international partners.
President Museveni made the remarks today at the final day of the 2nd Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State of Troop-Contributing Countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somaliaat Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.
President Museveni cited that African nations liberation struggles succeeded due to African peer support with several examples including Tanzania and Mozambique support for Uganda’s anti- Idi Amin efforts and confirmed Africa’s capacity to sustain support efforts for stabilization of Somalia.
President Museveni therefore justified Uganda’s military intervention in Somalia, saying the country’s participation in the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia is rooted in regional security and African solidarity.
President Museveni said Uganda’s intervention was prompted by the growing threat posed by extremist Islamist groups in Somalia, which sought to impose their beliefs on others through violence and posed a danger to regional peace and stability.

The President said the second reason for Uganda’s deployment was to stand in solidarity with Ethiopia, which had become increasingly vulnerable to attacks by extremist groups operating in Somalia and Sudan.
President Museveni emphasized that extremist and chauvinistic groups should abandon attempts to force their beliefs on others and instead embrace peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and mutual respect among different societies.
While speaking at the same event, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for their significant contribution to the peace and stabilisation mission in Somalia, describing them as the backbone of the mission over the past two decades.
Mahmoud Youssouf praised the professionalism, discipline and courage demonstrated by Ugandan and other African troops serving under the African Union mission in Somalia and paid tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, saying their dedication has helped advance peace, security and stability in Somalia.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire, has announced a set of resolutions adopted by Heads of State from troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) at the close of their Extraordinary Summit held at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the mission, called for predictable and sustainable financing, and emphasized continued support for Somalia’s security transition and regional stability.
