Police in Rukungiri District have recovered an AK-47 gun that was stolen from Rwakaraba Trading Centre in Nyakyishenyi Subcounty about two weeks ago.
The firearm was retrieved from the house of a man identified as Saturday, son of Byasigaraho, in Runyinya Cell, Kahoko Parish, Nyakyishenyi Subcounty.
According to District Police Commander (DPC) SSP Apollo Kyangungu, the recovery followed an intelligence-led operation. He assured residents of Nyakyishenyi that they could now sleep peacefully, free from fear of armed attacks.
Kyangungu commended the community for their patience and cooperation during the investigation, urging residents to continue working with police to ensure safety rather than interfering with security operations.
Local leaders also welcomed the recovery, with Runyinya Cell Vice Chairperson Kwehangana Nelson noting that residents had been living in fear since the gun went missing. He said this was not the first time a firearm had been recovered in the same cell and praised the subcounty leadership for prioritizing security.
Nyakyishenyi LC3 Chairperson, Wednesday Twinomujuni, also expressed gratitude to the police and residents for their cooperation, stressing that the operation’s success had restored peace and calm in the area.
