Kigezi Region Police PRO ASP Elly Maate

The Police in Kabale District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 54 year old man identified as Vincent Rwomushana a resident of Kanyante village in Kibuga Sub-county who was allegedly cut by unknown assailants.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said that Rwomushana was attacked while returning to his home from a drinking spree on Christmas day at Hamuhokye Trading Centre by unknown people, who injured him on the head leaving him unconscious.

Maate explained that during the same night, one Mbabazize and others as they were going to Hamuhokye Trading Centre, they found him bleeding too much from the injured part, picked him and rushed him to Rushoroza Health Centre IV,  where he was pronounced dead yesterday December 26th 2025.

Mbabazize reported the matter to Kibuga LC3 Chairman Kamugisha Vicent who conveyed the same information to Kibuga Police Station and a report of murder was registered, the scene of crime was visited, processed and documented by the Police and a postmortem examination has been done to help in investigations.

Meanwhile the Police in Rukiga District are investigating circumstances under which a suspected tear gas explosive shattered the hand of a 17 year Dalton Akoragye, a son to Rev Jasper Byaruhanga of All Saints church Muhanga.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said that it took place yesterday December 26th in Muhanga Central Ward, Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga District.

Maate explained that the victim Akoragye was closing the church doors of All Saints Church Muhanga and suddenly an explosion occurred and when the neighbors responded, they found the victim’s left hand shattered and full of blood and he was in a serious pain, the place was full of suspected teargas smoke.

Maate explained that when the Police were informed, they responded in time, the victim was rushed to the Hospital by Police Integrated Highway Patrol vehicle.

The Police said that a case file was opened o investigate the likely cause of the blast and establish how the victim got into possession of such an ordinance and fragments of the suspected tear gas canister were recovered at the scene and exhibited. 

Maate said that since the victim stays near Muhanga Police barracks, there’s a likelihood that he picked the suspected tear gas canister from there for unknown reason and kept it.
