Dr Tanga Odoi addressing the Media about the upcoming Baraza

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has called on all party members to attend village barazas scheduled for Friday, July 10tb, 2026, to verify and confirm the party’s flag bearers for the forthcoming LC I and Women Council elections.

While addressing journalists at the Party headquarters in Kampala, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi described the exercise as a critical step in implementing the party’s electoral roadmap and ensuring that every village has duly verified candidates ahead of the national nomination process.

Dr Tanga Odoi announced that the barazas will be held simultaneously in all 72,000 villages across the country, beginning at 10:00a.m and urged every National Resistance Movement member to attend the meeting at their respective village Baraza ground.

“The purpose of the baraza is to verify that the candidates who were selected as NRM flag bearers for LC I and Women Council elections are still available, alive, and willing to contest on the party ticket,” Dr Tanga Odoi said.

He explained that the meetings would also provide an opportunity to fill any gaps that may have arisen, such as where a flag bearer has passed away, withdrawn from the race, or is no longer interested in contesting.

In such cases, under the guidance of the National Resistance Movement Electoral Commission registrar, village members will identify a replacement through consensus and where consensus is not possible, an election will be conducted.

Dr Tanga Odoi emphasized that every village had previously elected its flag bearers, and the July 10 Barazas are intended to validate those candidates rather than to begin a fresh selection process, he however noted that any vacancies identified during the exercise must be filled immediately to ensure that every village is represented.

Following the barazas, the verified names of all flag bearers will be forwarded to the Office of the NRM Secretary General for endorsement between July 11th and July 14tb 2026 and the endorsed candidates will then be formally nominated by the Independent Electoral Commission at the sub-county level from July 15th to July 19th 2026.

Dr Tanga Odoi said the Party’s flag bearers will subsequently participate in the national Local Government elections organized by the Independent Electoral Commission of Uganda and the Women Council elections are scheduled for July 23rd 2026, followed by the LC I elections on July 28th 2026.

He appealed to all aspiring candidates and party members to make it a priority to attend the village barazas, stressing that the exercise is essential for strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and ensuring the NRM presents duly verified candidates across the country.

“The success of these elections begins with every member taking part in the village baraza. We call upon all NRM members to set aside whatever they are doing and attend the meetings in their respective villages at 10:00 a.m. on July 10th, so that we can prepare our flag bearers for victory in the forthcoming elections,” He said.

He added that the NRM Electoral Commission staff, district election officers, registrars, and regional supervisors have completed preparations and will oversee the exercise to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible verification process in all villages nationwide.

The Press Conference was attended by several NRM Electoral Commission officials, including the Deputy Electoral Commission Chairperson, Hon Jachan Omach and Commissioners Hon James Tweheyo and Hon Auma Modesta
