KAMPALA- The President of National Unity platform-NUP has been rushed to Nsambya Hospital after being hit by a tear gas canister in the leg.
Kyagulanyi was injured by police officers in Kira-Bulindo at around 5:30 pm while returning from a community dinner meeting held at the residence of NUP’s Lawyer George Musisi, on Tuesday evening.
On his return, escorted by a group of NUP supporters and riders, commonly known as Freedom riders, they were blocked by Police from proceeding on the main road in procession, which resulted in running battles and teargas as police dispersed the crowds.
According to Waiswa Mufumbiro, Deputy Spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), who was accompanying Kyagulanyi, the NUP leader was struck by a tear gas canister on his left leg below the knee after he exited their vehicle to engage with the officers. The canister was allegedly thrown at their vehicle, hitting Kyagulanyi in the process.
Video footage posted by Ghetto TV shows Kyagulanyi’s supporters, led by his bodyguard Eddie Mutwe, carrying him to the nearby Jema clinic for medical attention, where he received the first aid before being transferred to Nsanbya hospital.
But the Police Spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, has said that Kyagulanyi and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town, and when police advised against it, they insisted on the procession.
“When Hon. Kyagulanyi left the venue, he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.” Rusoke said.
He added: “During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot.” Rusoke further said.
