Veterinary authorities in Kasese district have revealed that livestock is still being threatened by a number of diseases. According to them, the goats are mostly hit, flowed by sheep and pigs among others.
Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the District Veterinary Officer says the animals including goats, sheep, pigs and cows are currently being affected by Peste des Petits ruminants (PPR), swine flu and foot and moth diseases respectively.
Speaking to our reporter yesterday morning at his office in Rukoki, Dr. Kibaya noted that since June this year, 834 goats have been affected with the Peste des Petits ruminants (PPR) while 719 have died.
He mentioned the most affected sub-counties as Bugoye, Kyabarungira, Kitswamba, Malibaand Lake-Katwe. Other affected lower local governments are Katwe- Kabatooro, Hina, Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Councils, Nyamwamba and Central Divisions in Kasese Municipality.
He, however, attributed the challenge to the farmers’ low opinion about vaccinating their animals and the rate at which animals are being ferried in the district from other local governments.
Dr. Kibaya also indicated that the swine flu and foot and mouth diseases had started affecting pigs and cattle respectively.
He advised the public to carry out testing of their animals and restrict others from being introduced into their communities.
He has since warned against the public against consuming sanga meat in order to avoid contracting diseases associated with eating unhealthy meat.
