In a significant turn of events, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has officially named Nathan Nandala Mafabi as its presidential flag bearer for the upcoming 2026 general elections. This announcement follows the decision of party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) to step down and endorse Mafabi.
The endorsement comes after extensive internal discussions led by senior party leaders and elders. Amuriat, who represented the FDC in the 2021 presidential elections, acknowledged the elders’ request to step aside, allowing Mafabi to lead the party into the next election cycle.
In his statement, Amuriat highlighted his long-standing association with Mafabi, spanning 28 years, and emphasized his unwavering loyalty to the FDC. He expressed that his decision was driven by a desire for unity within the party, reinforcing his commitment to the FDC’s success.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi, now the party’s chosen candidate, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by party leadership and members. He views this endorsement as a pivotal moment for the FDC, pledging to guide the party toward a successful campaign in 2026.
In related news, Jack Sabiiti, the FDC chairman, announced that the party’s delegates conference, originally scheduled for July 31, 2025, to elect the presidential flag bearer, has been canceled in light of this new development.
The FDC now looks forward to rallying behind Mafabi as it prepares for the upcoming election, marking a critical moment in the party’s history.
