Residents in Kekubo trading centre and users of 14km Kekubo-Kanyankwazi road are protesting the poor state of the road.
The roads connects Kabale town to Kitumba Sub County through Kanyankwazi, Lake Bunyonyi and other areas.
The residents say that the road is characterized of huge potholes that have made it impassable especially during rainy days. They argue that the municipality has spent over three years without working on the road.
Denis Modin, a student at Kabale University says that whenever it rains the road turns immotorable. Modin added that he cannot attend the lectures in time since he has to pass to Kabale town which is very far and costly.
He says that last years, the boda boda riders were charging them 1000 shillings from Kekubo trading centre to Kabale University, but they are now forced to pay between 2000 to 2500 shillings after the poor state of the road worsened.
“We are really living in a very poor state because of the roads in the area which are impassable during the rainy season. It’s as we don’t have leaders to address these issues” he noted.
Piassay Atuheire, who deals in shoe selling along the road say that during the rainy season, the vehicles and motorcycles splashes water into their businesses and to the residents using the road.
January Tumwijukye, who owns a retail shop at Kekubo roundabout, says that the road drainages are blocked and whenever it rains, water pours to their businesses destroying their merchandise. He wonders why the municipality leadership has kept a deaf ear to fix the road despite several appeals.
The Kabale Municipality Engineer Alex Tumwesigye admits that the roads are in a poor state. Tumwesigye however says that the municipality is already in advanced plans of rehabilitating the road soon though he didn’t disclose exactly when the road will be worked upon.
“We’re already in final plans to work upon these roads so that the residents can live in harmony within their areas of vicinity” Mr. Tumwesigye added.
