KAMPALA- The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC Katonga faction has opposed the idea of electing the Leader of Opposition in parliament and the opposition chief whip.

This IS after THE Mityana South County MP, Richard Lumu, was granted leave to introduce a private members bill to cause amendments in the Administration of parliament Act.

Lumu wants the LoP and the opposition Chief whip voted by all opposition parties in Parliament from the current procedure where the main opposition party names the two leaders.

Speaking to the media at Katonga offices, the Interim president of FDC faction Erias Lukwago, said that if this law is amended, it will kill the existing spirit of multiparty democracy and the authority given to the majority opposition party in parliament.

He asked the LoP to put his group in order to avoid being eaten up by the ruling National Resistance Movement government through the influence of the speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

This comes at a time when MP Richard Lumu has proposed a new amendment to simplify the process of removing the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament.

The proposed legislation aims to reduce the number of signatures required to censure the LoP and Commissioners from 177 to 100.

Lumu justified this proposal by citing the difficulty of collecting 177 signatures, as seen in MP Theodore Ssekikubo’s motion against the commissioners for allegedly awarding themselves Ugx 1.7 billion.

Additionally, Lumu’s motion further suggests that the Deputy Speaker of Parliament should be from the opposition party, as both current presiding officers are from the ruling party.

He also proposes that the second run out from the presidential elections automatically becomes an ex-official in parliament, number of commissioners be increased from the current five to six among other amendments.
