KAMPALA– The case against the former state minister for Karamoja Affairs Mary Gorret Kitutu, her brother Michael Naboya regarding the theft of iron sheets that were procured to empower vulnerable Karamoja communities has been pushed to October 29th 2024.
The case has been adjourned by Anti-corruption court Judge Jane Kajuga Okuo as they wait for the determination of an appeal regarding violations of her rights before, during and after arrest.
Kitutu complained that the Uganda Police, the Parliamentary Committee on Presidential Affairs, the media and other state institutions of subjected her to torture, inhumane and degrading treatment during the course of the investigations against her in the case of mismanagement of Karamoja iron sheets.
That as a result of the alleged gross violation of her rights, Kitutu contends that the criminal trial against her be declared a nullity and the charges be dismissed.
But her application was dismissed by High Court Anti-Corruption Division.
Having been disatisfied with the decision, Kitutu lodged a notice of Appeal and applied to have the proceedings stayed.
In April 2024, Kitutu , her brother Naboya together with her personal Assistant Abaho Josua were arraigned before the Anti-corruption court and charged with the theft of over 14500 ironsheets that were part of the Karamoja peace building initiative.
