NEWS– Kanungu District Chairperson Eng Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo has emphasized the importance of sustainable wetland usage for various activities like fish farming, beekeeping, and poultry rearing to safeguard rainwater sources without degradation. 

Eng Arinaitwe Kajojo made the remarks on Friday while speaking at the World Water and Sanitation Day which  commemorated at Rushaka Primary School in Nyamirama Sub-County under the theme “Water for Peace.”

Eng Arinaitwe Kajojo urged citizens to prioritize environmental protection and proper waste management, because its poor handling will affect the entire universe.

The District Chairperson also addressed the compensation process for farmers whose crops were damaged by wildlife, stressing the need for awareness of the procedures set by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The RDC Kanungu Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire was represented by Deputy District Internal Security Officer Muhwezi Adamson emphasized the crucial link between water and peace and highlighted the myriad of challenges stemming from water scarcity, including poor sanitation, economic hardships, social issues, and international conflicts over water resources.

While speaking at the sake event, Kanungu CAO, Abdallah Awuye emphasized the importance of service delivery, expressing concern over complaints about rude health workers and staff shortages in health facilities and announced plans to recognize and reward best-performing entities, including contributors to improved sanitation performance.

Assistant District Health Officer Kanungu, Katto Besisira, highlighted the sanitation situation in the district and noted that while 95% of homes have toilets, the remaining 5% still practice open defecation, contributing to the poor sanitation and this are responsible for spread of diseases.

Assistant Water Officer Kobusheshe Martin assured residents of collaboration with various agencies to ensure access to safe and clean water and appreciated the efforts of organizations such as Awake, African Water Solutions, and National Water and Sewerage Corporation in extending water access across Kanungu.

Kanungu District Communications Officer, Ms Mwajuma Twha Adam said that the event underscored the importance of water conservation, environmental protection, and collaborative efforts to ensure access to clean water and sanitation, promoting peace and well-being in Kanungu and beyond.
