Kasese District community promises to vote NRM 100% because of re-opening the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha fish Market in Bukonzo county West in Kasese District at the Uganda-DRC border.

Mpondwe-Lhubiriha fish market at the Uganda-DRC border has is now a living testimony to the Kasese District community, Uganda as a country and the other East African countries. 

The market since it was reopened is now a relief to hundreds of traders and thousands of community members as its employing over 2000 people including loaders, off loaders and vendors among others.

The market was closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing traders to relocate to the DRC side, but recently, the facility was officially opened by Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa the commander of the Uganda peoples defence forces (UPDF) Fisheries protection unit ( FPU) in Uganda fisheries sector and through her efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices, prevent illegal fishing and protect the rights of fishermen.

Some of the traders including Gorret Musoki, Yohana Kasereka and Judith Assasira noted that before the market was reopened, they we struggling to make ends meet, and when the market was reopened, they have witnessed relief,” they also said that they are now selling their fish at a better price and it has also improve their livelyhoods livelihoods.” 

Some of the loaders and off loaders including Mr. Jockus Masereka a father of eight children resident of Kamasasa Village, Karambi sub-county, noted when they market was not operating, they could fail to rise food for their children and school fees but since it was opened, all his children are schooling. 

Mrs. Elizabeth Baluku a resident of Kabuyiri cell in Mpondwe Lubiriha town council who is a shop operator in the market, noted that since the market was reopened, the number of clients who are coming to their shops has increased hence increasing sells and profits. 

In his remarks the LCIII, Chairperson of Mpondwe Lubiriha town council together with the Kasese District LCV chairperson Mr. Eriphaz Muhindi Bukombi, both noted that the reopening of the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha fish market marks a new chapter in the lives of traders and community members.

With its strategic location at the Uganda-DRC border, the market is poised to become a major hub for trade and commerce in the region.
