Prisons PRO Frank Baine

NEWS– The Uganda Prisons Service Spokesman   Frank Mayanja Baine, has set strict adherence to the established Standard Operating Procedures following the outbreak of the red eye disease in Prisons in order to control the infection and ensure the safety of the inmates and staff.

According to a press release dated March 15th 2024 and signed by Senior Commissioner of Prisons Frank Baine, said that so far 1000 cases have been registered by the Uganda Prisons Service Health Department and 90% of the victims has already recovered.

The affected units include Kampala Remand Prisons, Upper Maximum Security Prison, Pader Prisons, Murchison Bzy Prisons, Kaweeri Prison, Lira Main Prisons, Luzira Women Prison and Erute Prisons.

Baine said that the transfer of prisoners from one prison to another has been suspended to stop the infection until the break out is brought under control and mandatory screening of all prisoners will be done at all prisons.

Baine said that the screening of prisoners will be done in collaboration with the Police and Ministry of Health while still at the Police and visitation of prisoners will be conducted under strict rules and regulations. 

He asked all Regional Prisons Commanders, District Prisons Commanders and Officers in Charge to ensure that the strict guidelines are compiled with immediate effect as the Uganda Prisons is committed to keep vigilance and safeguard the health and wellbeing of inmates and the general public.
