KAMPALA- Teachers under their umbrella organization the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union are now stranded after the Anti-corruption unit of state house freezing funds amounting to over four billion shillings on an account at Equity Bank Wandegeya, impounding vehicles and equipment belonging to the teachers SACCO.

The actions are related to allegations of mismanagement of the 6.6 billion shillings they received from President Yoweri Museveni.

Part of the 6.2 billion shillings had been used to purchase the SACCO premises in Kiwologoma Wakiso district which is the National office of the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union SACCO members.

Out of the 20 billion presidential grant, 6.6 billion shillings was given to the teachers SAACCO meant to ensure that teachers get side incomes.

Mutesasira Evans Kaganizo the President General Uganda liberal teachers union says they had started using the money to implement their road map when state house Anti-corruption Unit swung in action to confiscate their double cabin pick up, a van and directed Equity Bank to flag their account on allegations that have so far been proven to be false.

Speaking after a teachers meeting at their National office , Mutesasira Evans Kaganizo is appealing to President Museveni who gave them the money to intervene because part of the money frozen in Equity Bank wandegeya are teachers savings from the teachers Sacco.

Among the projects is 500 Acres of land the teachers purchased as an investment for the benefit of the teachers but cannot be utilized because they are not able to fully pay for the land because they have no access to their funds.

In January the Sacco had engaged to Audit their books by 15th of March but they have no access to their documents which have been confiscated by Police and the state House Anti-corruption Unit.

He says that their road map is to improving teachers’ standards in the education sector and improving livelihoods through direct financial support to teachers’ self-help projects across the country.
