Unknown Militants have today morning staged attacks in Mali’s capital Bamako and in several locations inside the country in an apparently coordinated assault involving multiple groups.
Two loud explosions and sustained gunfire were heard early near Mali’s main military base Kati outside the capital Bamako, and soldiers were deployed to block off roads in the area.
It is reported that there was similar unrest at around the same time in the central town of Sevare and the town of Kidal and City of Gao in Northern Mali.
In a statement released today morning indicated that the fighting is ongoing and the Government Military forces are defending the City and engaging repelling the attackers.
Witnesses have told journalists about the explosions and sustained gunfire early today morning around the Kati military base, a major installation outside the capital.
One resident, who was travelling back to Bamako from Ethiopia, told journalists that all flights into the city were cancelled early today and it is not yet clear whether the reported attacks have affected the airport and it is also unclear who is behind the attacks.
The US Embassy in Mali has advised citizens to shelter in place and avoid travel, citing explosions and gunfire around the Modibo Keita International Airport in Bamako and near Kati.
Mali is currently ruled by a Military Junta led by Gen Assimi Goïta, who first seized power in a coup in 2020, promising to restore security and push back armed groups.
The ruling Military junta had popular support when it took power, promising to deal with the long-running security crisis prompted by a separatist rebellion in the north by ethnic Tuaregs, which was then hijacked by Islamist militants.
The UN peacekeeping mission and French forces had been deployed in 2013 to deal with the escalating insurgency and both have left since the junta took over, and the military government has hired Russian mercenaries to tackle the insecurity.
However, the Jihadist insurgency has continued and large parts of the north and east of the country remain outside government control.
