AQUATIC TRAGEDY: 2 fishermen drown in Lake Albert, marine divers set to retrieve bodies

NEWS– The territorial police in Rukungiri district are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of two people who are alleged to have been killed at the waters of lake Edward.

The two are Sunday Moses 22 year old fisherman at Rwenshama landing site, resident of Rumira cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari sub county in Rukungiri district and Namanya Innocent 26, also  a fisherman at Rwenshama landing site, resident of Kyehunde village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub county in Rukungiri district.

Kigezi Region Police spokesman ASP Elly Maate told the press that on 8th July 2024 at around 2Pm, five fishermen namely; Atwibu Mwesigwa, Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, Byaruhanga 

Apollo, Sunday Moses and Namanya innocent, all employees of Mugenyi Aisha set off to lake Edward to carry out fishing activities.

Maate pointed out that they spent three days while carrying out the same.

The Police spokesman adds that on 11th July 2024 at around 10:30am, the five were preparing hooks to continue their activity of fishing still in Kagezi area -DR congo. It’s at this point that Atwibu Mwesigwa saw soldiers of Congo coming towards them, he made an alarm alerting his fellows to save for their life.

They started running in different directions while soldiers started firing bullets. When they reached on their meeting point (RV), they found Namanya Innocent and Sunday Moses missing.

The remaining three, Mukasa Rajabu  Midedo, Byaruhanga Apollo and Mwesigwa Atwibu returned back to Rwenshama landing site and informed their employer Aisha Namugenyi and other residents about the incident. 

The families and friends went back to Kagezi area and started looking for the missing until on 15th July 2024 when the two were recovered dead along the shores of lake Edward- Kagezi area part of DR-Congo.

A case of disappearance of the two had been registered at Rwenshama police station and now being investigated as murders.

Maate told the press that Statements have so far been recorded from survivors, postmortem was done on both bodies and inquiries are ongoing at Rukungiri Central Police Station under reference number CRB: 830/2024 & 831/2024 respectively.
