BUHWEJU– The Buhweju county Member of Parliament Francis Mwijukye is having sleepless nights as he faces a tough race from his rival Grace Agaba Byarugaba, a flamboyant woman contesting on a direct seat member of Parliament for Buhweju county, however she claims that she’s tormented with discrimination by her opponent MP Mwijukye who allegedly moves around in his campaign rallies telling people that his seat is not meant a woman.
While addressing the Journalists in a press conference recently, Agaba mentioned that in Buhweju county there are some leaders who think that their seats meant for men not suitable for women leadership, especially on the seat that she is vying for with MP Mwijukye.
Agaba further noted that when she came up to contest for Buhweju County member of Parliament, her opponents especially the incumbent started moving around telling people that the MP seat for Buhweju county is suitable for a man and people from this constituency are not ready to be led by a woman, something that she described as demeaning and discrimination against women.
Agaba reminds the legislator that he should not forget that there are a number of constituencies in this country which are or were led by women and they have performed better than him in their constituencies. She further noted that there is no law that prohibits a woman from contesting on a direct seat member of Parliament.
She referred him to some constituencies where development is visible under the leadership of brave women like Naome Kabasharira the incumbent MP Rushenyi County, Naome Kibaju MP Sheema North, Janet Kataha Museven former MP Ruhaama county among others. That leadership is about service delivery not about sex, tribe or religion based, people vote leaders based on the capacity, not necessarily on family background, where someone is born or where they are married.
“As Buhweju we are not different from other areas, stop confusing people that Buhweju cannot be led by a woman, that is selfishness and discrimination, I have the capacity to change Buhweju county more than some of my opponents think. I am a born of Buhweju, I know every corner of this constituency and what is pressing our people. No matter where I am married, I am here to develop my home area and put it the map of this country. We have seen prominent women in this country who have represented in Parliament the areas where they are born from yet married outside the constituencies which they represent. I appeal to my opponent to relax and leave cheap politics and focus on telling people what they want to do for them and what they have done for the constituency rather than diversionary and discrimination” said Agaba, the Aspiring MP Buhweju County
“My opponent married his wife outside Buhweju, should we also blame him for that? Government has given us rights to contest on any position of political leadership in this country, Ugandans can testify the good leadership which some women have delivered in this country, I ask the people of Buhweju county to entrust me on 15th January 2026 and give me mass votes to represent them in the Parliament so that they can also test on the goodness of the NRM government” she added
Agaba also asked for peaceful elections as the country gets close to the voting day for the general election 2026.
She urged electorates and supporters to stay firm and protect their voters location slips. She alleged that there are some people especially her opponents who are illegally buying off voter location slips from her supporters, she strongly condemned this as evil. She reminded all her supporters that even if they do not have National ID or Voters slip the but they are aware of the voting polling stations, the presiding officer will help confirm details their par on the National Voters Register.
Agaba is contesting as independent against MP Mwijukye Francis of PFF and their race is very tight.
