The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has lined up a series of sports activities that will see UPDF teams face Kabale Municipality sides in football and netball matches, alongside a marathon, as part of the build-up to the Tarehe Sita national celebrations in Kabale Municipality.
The sporting program scheduled for 4th February 2026, will climax on 5th February 2026 andc the events form part of the lead-up to the main celebrations, which will be held at the former National Teachers’ College playground in Kabale Municipality.
According to the UPDF 2 Infantry Division Public Information Officer Maj Kiconco Tabaro the activities are open to the public and free of charge, and are intended to strengthen civil–military relations while deepening the bond between the UPDF and the communities it serves.

The matches are expected to attract district and municipal leaders, religious leaders, youth, elders, residents from across the Kigezi sub-region, and senior military officers, including UPDF generals, in a spirit of unity and sportsmanship.
The Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture, Brigadier General Richard Karemire, said sports play a vital role in promoting discipline, teamwork, healthy living, and peaceful coexistence.
“The matches and other activities continue to strengthen our historical relationship with the civilian population. They are part of a humane approach to our engagement with the people,” Brig Gen Karemire said.
He added that such engagements provide opportunities for positive interaction between civilians and the military outside the formal security environment, helping to build trust and mutual understanding.
Beyond sports, the UPDF has continued to engage communities in the Kigezi sub-region through construction and community support projects. Youth ideological training sessions, as well as engagements with religious leaders and veterans, have also been conducted as part of the broader Tarehe Sita outreach programme.
All build-up activities are in line with the UPDF’s commitment to national development and community welfare, and are expected to boost public participation in the celebrations, reaffirming the Force’s dedication to national unity, patriotism, and people-centred service.
