Museveni gestures after being elected the Chairman of the East African Community

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been elected as the new Chairman of the East African Community to assume the one-year rotational chairmanship of the East African Community.

President Museveni is taking over from President William Somoei Ruto of Kenya and the election took place at the 25th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community Heads of State in Arusha and is being held under the theme: “Deepening Integration for Improved Livelihoods of East African Community Citizens.”

The 25th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community Heads of State focused on regional security, trade and the integration of Somalia and the Summit is addressing financial challenges and security tensions in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with significant diplomatic tension although Rwanda President Paul Kagame and Congolese leaders skipped the meeting. 

The Secretary General Ambassador Veronica Nduva, has also finished her term and Tanzanian Stephen Patrick Mbundi who has been the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was appointed the new Secretary General.

The Summit has also launched a regional Customs Bond, designed to ease cross-border trade and eliminate multiple, costly bonds as Somalia participated as the eighth member of the East African Community strengthening the bloc’s footprint.
