Uganda will on Friday May 22nd 2026 join the rest of the world to commemorate the international day for Diversity.
The day is being commemorated in Bukiende Sub-county, Mbale District under the this year’s IDB theme “Acting locally for global impact”
Ahead of the day’s activities, communities with support if the National Environment Management Authority and the the Mt. Elgon Project, communities in Kween District have begun restoring River Sundet in Kween and River Makuba in Mbale by planting a total of 15,150 seedlings along the rivers.
Francis Ogwal the commissioner Environment planning and coordination at NEMA says they will continue facilitating the planting of indigenous trees comprising of bamboo) and Nappier grass.
Okirya Ateker james the project manager of the Mt Elgon project implemented by National Environment Management Authority says they have identified more indigenous trees that can survive in Kween and Mbale.
