Kigezi Region Police PRO ASP Elly Maate

The Police in Kanungu District have arrested a 64 year old man identified as Yonasi Kwitegeka also known as Swankuru a resident of Rwenyerere cell in Biwomborwa Parish in Kihihi Town Council allegedly for having carnal knowledge of two girls of 7 year and 9 year of age respectively.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the incident and explained that it’s alleged that, in the early month of May 2026 at  Rwenyerere cell, the victims were sent to the home of the suspect in the neighborhood to collect passion fruits who used this chance and promised them money and lured them into sexual acts.

Maate said that preliminary investigations indicate that it is alleged  that he defiled them more than three times on different days and that each time he did it, he could scare the victims not to tell their mother.

However, when their health condition worsened, their mother got concerned and they narrated to her of how the said suspect has always defiled them and promised them money and this prompted her to open up a case against the suspect at Kihihi Police Station and was accordingly apprehended.

Maate said that it’s very unfortunate, a person of that age,  who is supposed to advise and provide safety and protection of the young ones against sexual abuse, is the the one involved in committing such an offense against them.

Meanwhile the Traffic Police in Kanungu District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 35 year old man identified as Kenneth Owomugisha a resident of Rwangoboka cell in Karubezi Parish Nyakinoni Sub-county Kanungu who allegedly died in a traffic road accident and two others were seriously injured.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the accident and named the two injured victims as Jennifer Kesande from Kanyantorogo and Fortune Ahabwe from Kihihi respectively.

The accident took place when motor vehicle registration number UBH 240P was from Rutenga weekly market  loaded with goods and passengers and unfortunately when it reached Mashenya due to poor road it failed to balance due to the heavy load.

Maate explained that in the process it overturned and caused the death of one person who died on spot and two others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Katate Health Center IV for treatment.

Maate said that the scene of crime was visited and documented and the body was taken to Katate Health Center IV Mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.
