THE Uganda Episcopal Conference that brings together all the Catholic Bishops in Uganda has today further announced the cancellation of Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations prayers at Namugongo Shrine following increased cases of Ebola in the country.
According to a Press Release dated today May 26th 2026 and signed by the Chairman of Uganda Episcopal Conference who is also the Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese Rt Rev Joseph Antony Zziwa, the Namugongo celebrations have been postponed to 2027.
In the statement which our reporter has seen, Kasese Catholic Diocese which was expected to aminate over the Uganda Martyrs Celebrations this year will go ahead with preparations for next year.
Bishop Zziwa pointed out clearly that this year Uganda Martyrs Commemoration will be held in local churches under the guidance of respective Diocesan Bishops in consultatation with relevant government authorities in the area.
Nonetheless, Bishop Zziwa made it categorically clear that Church leaders must strictly observe the Standard Operating Procedures issued by the Ministry of Health regarding religious gathering without fail.
Bishop Zziwa called all Catholic faithfuls and all people of goodwill to continue praying for the nation and the people already affected by Ebola outbreak as measures are taken to stop the disease.
