The swearing-in ceremony, held yesterday at Mayor’s Garden Playground in Kihiihi Town Council, was part of the nationwide inauguration of newly elected LC 3 Chairpersons and councillors following the recent local government elections.
Tumwrsigye, took oath alongside councillors from various Wards amid celebrations attended by local leaders, residents and security personnel and during the first council sitting after the swearing-in ceremony, Nsaba Benon retained his seat as Speaker of Kihiihi Town Council after going through unopposed, while Richard Munyakaazi was elected Deputy Speaker.
In his maiden speech, Tumwesigye thanked the people of Kihiihi for entrusting him with leadership and called for unity and cooperation among residents in transforming the Town Council and outlined several priorities for his administration, including improving healthcare services, extending clean water to more communities, upgrading road infrastructure and increasing street lighting.
“I thank the people of Kihiihi for the trust they have shown in me. I call upon everyone to support development programs and guide us whenever there are challenges so that together we can build a better town council,” He said.
The Chairperson further appealed to natives of Kihihi living in Kampala and other urban centres to return home and invest in the area to boost economic growth and create employment opportunities for the youth.
He also commended the district security team led by Resident District Commissioner Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire for ensuring peace and security throughout the electoral period and during the swearing-in ceremony.
He later unveiled his Executive committee, which include Ms Alice Tumwesigyire as Deputy Mayor, Zaid Iraguha as Secretary for Finance and Planning, Tally Seduriyano as Secretary for Social Services and Community Development and Ms Hope Ikageneya as Secretary for Production and Works.
During the event, the elections for standing committee leadership were also conducted and Vincent Mbonimpa was elected Chairperson of the Finance Committee after securing 7 votes against Ms Shamillah Nyiramahoro’s 6 votes, while Ms Immaculate Tugumisirize won the position of Chairperson for the Social Works Committee with 8 votes, defeating Bright Niwamanya, who garnered 5 votes.
Residents expressed optimism that the new leadership would address key service delivery challenges and steer Kihiihi Town Council toward greater development.
Meanwhile, while speaking at the same event, Kanungu Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mwesigye Amanyire warned residents to strictly observe Ebola prevention Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) amid growing concerns over cross-border interactions with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The RDC reminded the residents and local leaders during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Kihihi Town Council Chairperson and councillors at Mayor’s Garden in Kihiihi Town Council that although no case has been reported in the district, they should take top most precautions to avoid the Ebola spread bearing in mind that Kanungu is a vulnerable district at the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.
Amanyire expressed concern over the district’s close proximity to the DRC, where Ebola outbreaks have previously been reported, saying the situation puts border communities at a higher risk of exposure to the deadly disease.
He particularly warned traders and individuals who allegedly cross into Congo illegally during night hours to conduct business deals to immediately stop the practice, describing it as dangerous and irresponsible.
The Resident District Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritize their health by following all Ministry of Health guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.
He called upon public institutions including banks, markets, churches, and schools to reinforce preventive measures by ensuring the availability of handwashing facilities with soap and clean water, temperature screening devices, and proper hygiene practices.
Amanyire specifically appealed to operators of daily markets and busy public places to strengthen monitoring and encourage people to maintain cleanliness and observe health precautions saying that adherence to SOPs would help protect communities while allowing business and social activities to continue normally.
The RDC also encouraged local leaders to work closely with health officials and security agencies to ensure that communities remain alert and informed about Ebola prevention measures.
The RDC remarks come at a time when health authorities across border districts continue intensifying surveillance and public sensitization campaigns to prevent any possible outbreak in Uganda.
