Kigezi Region Police PRO ASP Elly Maate

The Police in Rukungiri District are investigating circumstances under which two people, a husband and a wife were burnt to death from their house of residence.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate confirmed the incident that took place in Ncerere village in Kabinga Parish in Buhunga Sub-county in Rukungiri district and identified the victims as 30 year old Byamukama Isaaca boda boda ridder and his 27 year old wife Akatuhurira Christine.

Maate explained that the matter was yesterday July 12th 2025 reported by Ncerere LC 1 chairperson Ncerere Kaganga Lawrence after receiving a phone call from Kariisa that there was smoke coming from the house of deceased which was locked from outside at the front part. 

This prompted the chairperson to call the phone numbers of the occupants which were all off and he rushed to ascertain what was happening and upon arrival, he found the house on fire.

The Chairperson together with other residents raises an alarm and respondents gained the entry through behind off cuts fence and found the behind door open but the bedroom’s door was locked from outside. 

They forcefully opened it for the possibility of rescuing them but unfortunately they found both of them burnt to death and the properties in the bed room burnt to ashes. 

The matter was immediately reported to the Police who rushed to the scene,  examined and documented, statements recorded from witnesses and the bodies retrieved and taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III Mortuary for postmortem examination after which the bodies were handed over to the relatives for burial.

Maate described the incident as barbaric and malicious act of criminality and promised that the security organs are investigating the cause of the fire and hunting for suspects involved who need to be identified and arrested and charged in courts of law accordingly.
