The Police in Rukungiri District have registered a single fatal road accident where one person died and several others were injured.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman ASP Elly Maate has confirmed the unfortunate accident which occurred on Tuesday night at Mironzi I Cell, Bikurungu Town Council in Rukungiri District, where motor vehicle registration number H4DF 2476 driven by yet to be identified UPDF soldier was involved.
Maate identified the the deceased was identified as Zefaniya Ssekikayi a resident of Kisenyi in Nakasongola Town Council and the other victims injured in the accident were UPDF some officers and civilians who were aboard the ill fated Vehicle.
Maate named the injured UPDF victims as RA 178799 Staff Seargent Muhanguzi Diadon, RA 188849 Staff Seargent Luwoko Geoffrey, RA 221292 Corpal Angundu Edward, RA 294059 Private Katurole Jennifer and RA 261779 Private Chevet Leonard.
The cilivilians were identified as Tushemereirwe Judith, Tumuramye Maureen, Birabwa Jessica, Nantumbwe Julia and Luganda Henry
Maate explained that it’s alleged that, the crew comprising of Army officers and civilians left Nakasongola for the burial of a fallen soldier Staff Sgt Twebaze Benard and upon reaching Rukungiri, proceeded to the deceased’s place using Bikurungu – Rwenshama Road, however, the road was too narrow for the passage of the vehicle, only for the driver to notice the front tyre on the passenger’s side had went off road and slipped off hence causing the vehicle to overturn on the side of the passengers thereby injuring a dozen of people on board.
The injured victims were immediately rushed to Kalori Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital and upon arrival, one of them identified as Zefaniya Ssekikayi was pronounced dead.
Maate said tgat the scene of the accident was visited, and documented by a team of traffic officers and relevant statements were recorded, and the vehicle was towed and is currently parked at the Police yard pending IOV inspection.
Maate said that preliminary investigations indicate that probable cause of the accident was bad weather and the bad road which was too narrow.
